GUITARISTIC CYBORGS is an ongoing research on works for guitar and electronics by Jannis Wichmann and Tom Smith.

Originally a research and concert format by Jannis Wichmann, Guitaristic Cyborgs is now a collaboration with guitarist and PhD student Tom Smith since 2023. At Goldsmiths, University of London, Tom Smith researches the underrepresentation of the classical guitar in electronic-instrumental music and is technically, artistically and scientifically a luminary in the field.
What is true for composition alone is even stronger when combined with electronics: the field becomes white and cis-male dominated for structural rather than artistic reasons. For this reason, the focus here will remain on works by female composers and diversity will be considered from the outset (even if the lack of diversity remains visible). Only occasionally will works by male composers be presented here.

Ursprünglich ein Forschungs- und Konzertformat von Jannis Wichmann, ist Guitaristic Cyborgs seit 2023 eine Zusammenarbeit mit dem Gitarristen und Doktoranden Tom Smith. Tom Smith forscht an der Goldsmiths University of London über die Unterrepräsentation der klassischen Gitarre in der elektronisch-instrumentalen Musik. Er ist technisch, künstlerisch und wissenschaftlich eine Koryphäe auf diesem Gebiet.
Was für Komposition alleine schon gilt, ist durch die Kombination mit Elektronik noch stärker: Das Feld wird aus strukturellen und nicht aus künstlerischen Gründen weiß und cis-männlich dominiert. Deshalb soll hier ein Fokus auf Werken von Komponistinnen liegen und Diversität von Anfang an mitgedacht werden (auch wenn die fehlende Diversität sichtbar bleibt). Nur vereinzelt werden hier auch Werke von männlichen Komponisten vorgestellt

About us
Tom Smith is a guitarist and doctoral student at Goldsmiths, University of London, whose research addresses the underrepresentation of the classical guitar in electroinstrumental composition and performance. Prior to this, he completed an MMus in Performance at Goldsmiths and a BA at Brunel University, where he was awarded the Griffin Prize for Music. Tom's music has been featured on blogs and on BBC Radio, and he regularly performs around London with the London Mandolin Quartet.

Jannis Wichmann is a classical guitarist and sometimes a cross-border artist between different genres and styles. He composes and produces music for films and audio books and realised the production of his debut album "Konfrontation" (Aliso Records, 2019) on his own in 2017/2018. The second album "Field Recordings #Guitarworks" was released in Nov. 2021 and was funded by the Claussen-Simon- Stiftung. From 2010 to 2021 he worked at the Sophie Drinker Institut (Bremen) in the field of music & gender and published several articles in the field of classical guitar and gender. This also resulted in the website www.gitarre-gendern.de, which he runs together with Hannah Lindmaier. Jannis teaches at the Uelzen Music School and has teaching assignments at the International College of Music Hamburg and in the the Music Therapy programme at the MSH Campus Arts and Social Change. www.janniswichmann.com
Tom Smith ist Gitarrist und Doktorand an der Goldsmiths, University of London, und beschäftigt sich in seiner Forschung mit der Unterrepräsentation der klassischen Gitarre in der Komposition und Aufführung von Elektroinstrumenten. Zuvor absolvierte er einen MMus in Performance an Goldsmiths und einen BA an der Brunel University, wo er mit dem Griffin Prize for Music ausgezeichnet wurde. Toms Musik wurde in Blogs und im BBC-Radio vorgestellt, und er tritt regelmäßig in London mit dem London Mandolin Quartet auf.

Er komponiert und produziert Musik für Filme und Hörbücher und realisierte 2017/2018 in Eigenregie die Produktion seines Debüt-Albums „Konfrontation“ (Aliso Records, 2019). Das zweite Album "Field Recordings #Guitarworks" erschien im Nov. 2021 und wurde von der Claussen-Simon-Stiftung gefördert. Von 2010 bis 2021 arbeitete er am Sophie Drinker Institut (Bremen) im Bereich Musik & Gender und veröffentlichte im Bereich Konzertgitarre und Gender mehrere Artikel. Daraus hervorgegangen ist auch die Website www.gitarre-gendern.de, die er gemeinsam mit Hannah Lindmaier betreibt. Jannis unterrichtet u.
